Diagnosing Schizophrenia: Don’t Work from Drug to Diagnosis

The issue of obtaining diagnoses to meet exclusions for quality measures (QMs) came to a head this past February when the American Health Care Association, Leading Age, AMDA: The Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine, and six other professional/trade associations issued a joint statement on the diagnosis of new-onset schizophrenia in nursing homes. This statement came in response to concerns raised throughout long-term care that residents were receiving a new diagnosis of schizophrenia to justify the use of antipsychotic medications.
