Position Change Alarms: Make Sure They Aren’t for Staff Convenience

This fall, the MDS and the new survey process come together to place an increased focus on when—and why—position change alarms are used in nursing homes. This convergence requires directors of nursing services (DNSs) to take a fresh look at the use of these alarms in their facilities and ensure that the systems are in place to support their use on an individualized basis while simultaneously avoiding an increase in falls, says Angie Szumlinski, NHA, RNC, director of risk management for HealthCap/QA Reader in Ann Arbor, MI.
