High Risk Meds: Confusion Over Medical Director and Prescriber Roles Clarified

In many nursing homes, the medical director often also serves as an attending physician, which can blur the lines of responsibility when it comes to the management of high-risk medications.“It’s important to recognize that those two roles really are somewhat distinct,” said geriatrician Susan Levy, MD, a CMS consultant and the current president-elect of AMDA, the Society for Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine. “The role of the medical director focuses much more globally on the facility, whereas the attending [physician] focuses much more on the individual care of a resident in the nursing home.”
