The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a proposed rule on Thursday, July 16, 2015 with an emphasis on Infection Control (§483.80) that would significantly update requirements for nursing facilities’ participation in the Medicare and Medicaid programs. Under the proposed rule, nursing facilities would be required to have a system for preventing, identifying, reporting, investigating, and controlling infections and communicable diseases for all residents, staff, volunteers, visitors, and other individuals providing services. Additionally, each nursing facility would be required to have a designated infection prevention and control officer who would also serve on the facility’s quality assessment and assurance committee.
